In the second part of our Expert Talk with Max Weidele, we took an even deeper look at the topic of OT organizations – especially their establishment.
In the increasingly digitalized world, action is required in production companies in particular. The establishment of a proper, functioning OT organization plays a major role here. Since this can often be associated with some obstacles, we show how these can be overcome.

Building an OT Organization: Expert Talk with Max Weidele / Part 1
Our two interview partners have a lot of experience and know-how: Max Weidele is the founder of the free knowledge platform „Sichere Industrie“ with numerous expert contents on OT & OT Security. He is the CEO of the same-titled engineering office and is involved in a wide variety of future projects in networked production. Peter Lukesch, COO of ondeso, worked for a long time as an IT security officer in a NATO task force and as an officer in the German Air Force and was also responsible for IT security in office and production environments as an IT director.

Many production and automation companies shy away from setting up an OT team. One reason for this is that there are no ready-made standards for setting up such an organization. There is no blueprint that specifies what needs to be done. Each company’s structures are far too individual for that, because each has different locations, employees and facilities. The first step is especially important: listing all assets and identifying the responsible employees.
In most cases, a concise inventory leads to a good overview being gained quickly, thus shedding light on the situation. This makes it easier, especially for larger production companies, to organize themselves, protect production from downtime and make operations safer.
Defining individual requirements paves the way to a functioning OT organization. Often, not even such large measures are necessary – it may even be enough to transfer an employee from IT to the OT organization to make progress. In short, it’s about making your own behavior more agile by simply jumping into the topic.
