Due to the increasing digitalization of production facilities with regard to Industry 4.0, one thing is almost certain: No production facility can manage without IT security concepts. In this Expert Talk, you will learn why maintenance must also deal with this issue.
Together with our interview partner Professor Dr. Lennart Brumby, we explain the topic of “IT security in maintenance” and provide answers to the following questions:
Our two interview partners know what they’re talking about – and their backgrounds prove it: Prof. Dr. Lennart Brumby studied mechanical engineering, worked for a long time in the process industry and for Deutsche Bahn, and earned his doctorate in knowledge management. Since 2011, he is the course director for Service Engineering at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University in Mannheim, where he teaches students in the field of technical service and maintenance. Peter Lukesch, COO of ondeso, was IT manager responsible for IT security in office and production environments and worked for a long time as IT security manager in a NATO task force and as an officer in the German Air Force.

Are cyber attacks and hacking purely an office IT issue? We can answer that with a clear “No!”. Nevertheless, the responsibility for IT security in maintenance is mostly not or only moderately perceived. But especially the experience of the last years regarding cyber attacks like “WannaCry”, which made enormous waves in the industry, shows us that more awareness in the area of IT security is necessary.
To achieve this, both the IT department and those responsible for maintenance in a company must develop an awareness of the fact that the industrial IT systems in the production halls also need to be maintained and secured. A shared understanding of the situation and taking the right measures leads to increased security and avoids damage and downtime in production.
An example of this is the classic maintenance engineer who looks for signs of wear on his plant. These often manifest themselves in advance in the form of visual and acoustic conspicuities. Since this type of precaution is not possible in the IT sector and other digital means are used to protect the technology, the maintenance staff must be sensitized and trained in this area.

On May 24 and 25, 2023, the leading trade fair for maintenance will open its doors in Dortmund. It is an established stage for innovations and trends and at the same time a top-class information center for the entire industry. Prof. Dr. Brumby will be there with his students and an open lecture in his luggage and we will also be happy to present ondeso and our products in more detail. Visit us in hall 4 booth A15.
